A few days ago I posted an interview here with Ypsi High art teacher Lynne Settles about a new mural on the subject of local women’s history that she and her students had been working on in downtown Ypsilanti. Well, as the formal unveiling of the piece is set to take place tomorrow at 6:00 PM as part of Ypsi’s First Fridays festivities, I reached out to local historian Matt Siegfried to find out more about the 11 women depicted in the piece. [Siegfried, as you’ll recall, worked with the students to determine which women should be included in the mural.] What follows is my conversation with Siegfried taped earlier this evening in front of the mural, which I’m told the students, working with artist Doug Jones, will be finalizing tomorrow.
[The women featured in the mural are: Dr. Helen Walker McAndrew, Allie Louise DeHazen, Isa Stewart, Wealtha Sherman, Mary Eleanor Delany (McCoy), Carolyn King, Louis Artis, Almeda Morton, Anna Chalmers Alexander Knaggs, and Maude Forbes.]
